In the last 15 years, the number of physicians who would like to participate in clinical research has rapidly increased, mostly because of the awareness of the significance of clinical trials and the steady increasing interest and support of pharmaceutical companies.
Since Turkey is one of the countries negotiating to join the European Union in the future, there has been an ongoing revision of all legal documents and adaptation to EU rules and principles. As a result, there are some major changes in Turkey’s national policies. GCP has been implemented into the national regulations since 1993. Furthermore, the Ministry of Health published the Turkish translation of the ICH guidelines for GCP. Since 2008, Turkey has had its own guidelines regarding observational studies, which has been taken as a paradigm by most of the European countries.

With more than 70 million inhabitants, Turkey provides excellent preconditions for conducting clinical trials such as: a high number of well-equipped and well-established universities and state hospitals; highly qualified physicians; lower study costs related with ethical reviews, regulatory approvals and investigator compensation; a good success rates for patient recruitment and an access to a large number of drug-naïve populations. In addition, the EU adaptation process makes the country more and more attractive for clinical studies.
